The neighborhood of Willow Glen is part of the city of San Jose, filled with walkable tree-lined streets and diverse architecture. The historic downtown area is well known for its wide variety of shops and restaurants.
Willow Glen began as an unincorporated community in the mid-1800s. In fact, the original Willow Glen Road was renamed Lincoln Avenue in 1865, shortly after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
The city was incorporated in 1927, but this did not last for long because Willow Glen had no sewers. Rather than assume this expensive undertaking, residents voted in 1936 to be annexed to San Jose and linked to that existing sewage system. All the while, custom and semi-custom homes continued to be built in a wide range of architectural styles, including Victorian, Neoclassical, Colonial Revival and Craftsman, among others. Even larger homes have popped up in recent years.
